Rev. Lewis and five (5) members organized Trinity in 1909. Under Rev. Lewis' leadership, Trinity was located in Bigamtown, Walker-Avenue, and West Liberty. There is no recorded history regarding the services of the three pastors following Rev. Lewis - Taylor, McFadden, and Sampson. With Pastor A. E. Hilton, Trinity was relocated to 609 West Liberty Street. He pastured Trinity until his death. The shepherdship was picked up by Dr. H. H. Harvin, who built a new six room church that included an educational building. Dr. Harvin also organized choirs and ministries ( including Senior and Gospel choirs and Baptist Training, Willing Workers, and Presidents Club ministries). The first Sumter Baptist Missionary and Education Association meeting was held at Trinity in 1946 while Dr. Harvin served as pastor. The next leader of Trinity, Dr. Lewis W. Walker, Sr., pastured for twenty-five (25) years after being called in 1963. Under his term, the mortgage was satisfied; the church got central heat and air conditioning; and the Liberty Street property was purchased. After purchasing the Liberty Street property in 1977, with intentions to build a new edifice, the current facility was purchased here at 101 South Salem Street in July of 1978. On November 18, 1978 at 2:30pm, the Grand March to our current Salem Street location was held. The new Trinity had 25 rooms, six restrooms, a kitchen, and a fellowship hall with a seating capacity for 225. In September 1980, a daycare center was opened, and operated successfully for a period of time. Rev. Walker organized additional choirs, including the L. W. Walker. Contempo, and Male Chorus. Ministries he organized included: the Prayer Band, Youth Department, Trustee Wives, Deaconess, Hospitality, Young Women's Auxiliary, and Sunday School Training for Service. Rev. Larry C. Weston, our current undershepherd, seceded Rev. Walker. Pastor Weston accepted his call to Trinity on March 5, 1989. This visionary leader has organized choirs, ministries, and has done much to enhance the edifice and general operation of the church. Among the ministries organized by Pastor Weston are: Christian Education Council, Church Council, Christian Singles, Evangelism Outreach, Senor Citizens, Youth and Young Adult, Trinity Good News Newsletter, Food Service, Sharing and Caring, Women's, Tape and Audio-visual, Brotherhood, Athletic and Recreation, Budget and Audit, African-American Awareness, Personnel, Praise Dancers, Flaggers, Drama, HIV/AIDS, Junior Trustees, Junior Hospitality, Junior Ushers, Marriage Enrichment, Nursery, Nursing Aid, Transportation, Parking and Security, Soulfully Fit, Tutorial, and Prayer. New choirs include: Mass, Hallelujah, and Children's. Educational Training has been broadened to include annual participation in the Progressive National Baptist Convention's Congress, hosting the Sumter M & E Association Congress, Weekly Bible Studies for seniors (midday), adults, and youth. There is multiple training through workshops, seminars, and retreats. Other changes include the addition of "missionary" to Trinity Baptist Church and the changing of word "auxiliaries" to "ministries." Under Pastor Weston, Trinity is engaged in one-on-one foreign mission with a Pastor Authur in Kenya, Africa, supports the PNBC as a one percent church, and supports missions through United Ministries of Sumter, in addition to out local church mission projects. Improvement to the physical plant has included: renovation of the educational facility to double the classroom space upstairs, paving the parking lot around the immediate church, and fencing in the parking lot across the street. The administrative office has been renovated and is fully staffed. The kitchen has been revamped to meet commercial kitchen standards and the outside woodwork has been replaced with siding. Major purchases have included twenty-one and a half acres of land (off Miller Road and Wall Street), houses and land around the current site, a forty passenger bus, a fifteen passenger bus, four new vans, an electrical keyboard, drums, tape system, computers, copiers, fax machine, and other technological equipment. Under Pastor Weston's leadership, first daughter-of-the--house was called and first female trustees were elected at Trinity. There is also an annual production of a church calendar. A ward system for members has been established, and there has been substantial growth in membership and finances. A Building ministry has also been organized and the church is about to embark upon a multifaceted building project.
